Reflections
I think a piece of my work that captures a moment of success is my story about Yum!It is a restaurant review. Some of my favorite things about working on staff is hearing the voices of the community, and I had several members of the SPA community tell me that they tried the restaurant because of my review. I had a problem to solve in this story, because the natural light on the restaurant was making the food pictures turn out really weird, so I had to adapt and find the right angle so that there weren’t any shadows on the food. If I could go back to this successful story, I would tell myself to try a more diverse group of foods, because I had 2 sandwiches when I should have tried a greater variety of foods.
This year as a senior I had to be in more of a leadership role since our staff was more underclassmen. I think that I stepped it up a lot more this year in that sense, because especially with Zadie who sat beside me I would give her advice and answer her questions. I also helped a lot of people learn about the opinions section, and how to properly write an opinion story. I loved leading the editorial discussions this year. It was a new responsibility for me, as opinion editor it was my job to facilitate the conversation. It was hard at first, but I learned to just guide the conversation rather than force it in one direction, and we ended up with some great editorials this year!
I think pretty obviously the Rubicon has helped me with my writing skills, but also it has really helped me with my photography skills. I have learned about different angles for photos, and framing photos. I am definitely going to keep using these skills, as my senior project is working in the Star Tribune. I will also hopefully continue with some type of journalism in college, while it may not be working for a newspaper, I hope it at least stays involved in the journalist world.
I remember my first story in writing for publications, I was working on a page spread for the print, talking about Boys Hockey. I was so nervous, and emailed like 5 of the players to get interviews. I sat in the upper library with Quinn Appert, who was a junior at the time, and had the most awkward interview of my life, emerging with some new quotes. I took some photos at a game, and got my page spread and saw it published! While I will always remember this experience, I look back on the experience of writing my first story to my most recent stories. I reflect on how much more comfortable I am at writing, interviewing and taking photos. I see the difference in story quality and how much my skills have improved just by doing so many more stories.
Thank You,
Zekiah Juliusson
